Northparkes offers a range of apprenticeships, graduate programs and traineeships. By employing people in entry-level roles, everyone benefits. We gain a fresh perspective and unique contributions to our business – we also gain a diversity of ideas and experience.

Our program participants have the opportunity to learn in an industry setting, and benefit from tailored programs designed to enhance their technical and leadership skills.

Similarly, our scholarship programs provide financial and practical support to students who will go on to contribute to our local community, and perhaps one day join the mining industry.

Northparkes also partners with Universities to offer work placement opportunities onsite. Students return to university having completed their required workplace training, with a good understanding of the mining industry.

Recruitment process

To help you understand our recruitment process and to ensure you know what to expect, here is an outline of the typical stages that a successful applicant will progress through.

Acknowledgement of application

Once you have submitted your application, you will receive an email to acknowledge receipt of your application. This will confirm that your application has reached us.

Interviews

Based on the information you have provided in your application you may be invited to attend an interview. The interview will typically comprise a panel of three, with representation from the department that the role is in and Human Resources. The interview model used at Northparkes is the behavioural technique in which questions are asked about specific work experiences.

Security clearance

It is a condition of employment with Northparkes that you complete and pass a security clearance. Completion of the security clearance consent form will typically happen at or following the interview stage.

Additional assessments

For some specific roles, additional forms of assessment may be undertaken. Details of these will be explained to all applicants at the interview stage. These assessments provide us with additional information about your skills and abilities.

Pre-employment medical

All applicants are asked to undertake a pre-employment medical as one of the last stages of our recruitment process.

Offer of a position with Northparkes Mines

If successful you will be offered the opportunity to join our team. This offer will be typically made by phone and confirmed in writing.

Relocation

If you are not already a Parkes Shire resident, the relocation package relevant to your appointment will be explained to you when you are made an offer of employment with us.

Apprenticeships

Our program combines theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on experience in the mining industry.

This is a four year program including on-the-job training, coaching from experienced trades people and a qualification through a Registered Training Organisation.

On top of that Northparkes apprentices will be provided will all of the tools needed to complete their trade, free accommodation while attending TAFE, and extra tutor support for TAFE courses if needed.

You will get exposure to all aspects of mining throughout your time onsite and have the opportunity to specialise in an area of your choice in your fourth year.

To be eligible for a Northparkes apprenticeship:

  • You must be at least 17 years of age
  • Have a current Drivers Licence (manual preferred)

It is also highly desirable:

  • Completion of Year 12 or equivalent (by the commencement of the  Apprentice Program in January 2022)
  • Evidence of genuine interest in a trade (shown through work experience)

Indigenous scholarships

Northparkes Indigenous Scholarships provide financial support and encouragement to students interested in a career in the mining industry, in addition to those who wish to pursue non-technical degrees in other fields.

As of 2023, successful applicants receive $10,000 funding each year of their university studies.

In addition to financial support, recipients are also provided with a laptop to assist with their tertiary studies.

We provide constant support throughout your studies, and work placement opportunities during uni holidays. This ensures scholarship holders can attend, enjoy and eventually obtain employment in their chosen field.

Seven Indigenous tertiary students are currently supported by the program.

Northparkes Triple Flag Scholarships

The Northparkes Triple Flag Scholarship program will provide financial assistance to community members from the Parkes and Forbes local government areas who are successfully enrolled in university, TAFE, VET or other nationally recognised training programs.

 

Four (4) $5,000 scholarships will be awarded each year.

To be eligible you must;

  • Live in the Parkes or Forbes local government area
  • Be enrolled in university, TAFE, VET or other nationally recognised training program

Successful recipients will receive a one-off payment of $5,000. This payment is not based on marks.  It will be awarded at the start of the study period, to be used to help in a number of areas including relocating for study, rent, text books, course fees etc.

Applicants with ongoing study can reapply each year.

Applications for the Triple Flag Scholarship are now open and will close Sunday, 28th January 2024.

SMMO Sponsored Scholarships

Northparkes Sumitomo scholarships provide financial support and encouragement to students undertaking study within the Central West of New South Wales.

Our Sumitomo Scholarships are open to anyone under the age of 30 who is completing or has been accepted into study at university. Three (3) successful applicants will receive a one-off payment of $3,000 to help them with their studies.

Applications close Friday, 12th January 2024.

In addition to financial support provided by SMMO, Northparkes offers work experience and career mentoring to SMMO scholarship holders’ onsite.

Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania Scholarship eligibility criteria:

  • Reside within the Central West of New South Wales at the time of application
  • Be accepted into university or studying at university
  • Be under the age of 30 at the time of application

Shortlisted applicants will be required to complete a phone interview with our Northparkes HR team.

Graduate program

Northparkes’ Two Year Graduate Program of structured mentoring, development and support is designed to give you a solid foundation to kick start your mining career and fast track you into exciting positions where you will make your mark while also enjoying awesome lifestyle opportunities.

Northparkes is the most automated underground mine in the world and Australia’s fourth largest copper and gold producer located in the beautiful Parkes region of Central NSW.

In 2023 Northparkes will employ 12 graduates across our operations with a diverse variety of disciplines within the roles of:

  • Bachelors or equivalent within any of the following or a related discipline: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, geosciences, mine engineering, human resources and information technology

Vacation program

Northparkes’ eight week Vacation Work Program is designed to give you a solid foundation to kick start your mining career and fast track you into exciting positions where you will make your mark while also enjoying awesome lifestyle opportunities.

Our annual vacation work program runs for eight weeks over the summer university holidays. Work placement students spend time with the department most relevant to their studies. Project work to develop your skills is provided based on your technical background. You are also provided the opportunity to participate in a major community project. During your placement you will be paid, stay in company housing and be provided with all uniforms/ equipment needed to complete your role.
