Northparkes Mines Indigenous Scholarship are now open

The CMOC-Northparkes Mines (Northparkes) Indigenous Scholarships are now open for 2018. The aim of the scholarship program is to encourage and support Indigenous students who are interested in a career in the mining industry and those who wish to pursue non-technical degrees.

Examples of technical degrees include mining engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgy and geoscience. Examples of non-technical degrees include nursing, occupational health and safety, accounting, community relations and human resources.

The scholarship is offered to Indigenous students aged 30 or under who have obtained entry into a university degree.

Technical scholarship holders receive $10,000 per year, while non-technical scholarship holders receive $5,000 per year. In addition to financial support, Northparkes offers support throughout work placements both onsite and throughout Australia. So far scholarship holders have travelled as far as Cape York and Darwin to complete placements, as well as throughout regional NSW.

Courtney Straney of Condobolin is our Indigenous Scholarship holder for 2017. Courtney is studying a Bachelor of Law and Commerce at the University of Western Sydney. Courtney joins a cohort of 10 Northparkes Indigenous Scholarship holders.

Kerrod Griffiths and Gabrielle (Gabby) Ebsworth were awarded scholarships in 2016. Kerrod is in his second year of a Bachelor of Health and Science (Indigenous) at the University of Wollongong and Gabby is in her second year of Sociology at the University of Melbourne.

As part of Kerrod’s scholarship, he recently completed work placement at Northparkes with the Health team. “I had the opportunity to perform medicals under the supervision of a registered nurse; this experience will be invaluable in finding work when I complete my degree.”

Earlier this year, Gabby completed work placement at Parkes Neighbourhood Central (PNC). “I really enjoyed seeing all the great things PNC do for the Indigenous community in Parkes and Peak Hill.”

Applications close Wednesday 31 January 2018. For more information or to apply, please visit www.northparkes.com or contact Northparkes’ Talent and Development Coordinator via email at npm.recruitment@northparkes.com
